Just installed: How do I get from "debian:~#" to a Desktop, internet browser, etc.?

Hi, I'm new to Linux and I've just replaced my SuSE distro and installed Debian using a CD image I made with debian-31r4-i386-netinst.iso file.

Apparently it's installed, with the Grub dual boot (Windows-Linux), but when I choose Debian Linux all I get on my screen is a "debian:~#" shell.

How can I get a desktop, an internet browser and all those graphic elements I used to have with my SuSe distro?

Thank you in advance.

Hector.

You can probably get Gnome or KDE working from there, but you'd be better off to start over installing Etch instead of Sarge. Chances are very good that the reason you don't have a GUI is related to hardware recognition problems. Installing Etch will most likely solve those issues.

from your command prompt
debian:~# base-config

Choose Select and Install software

Highlight Desktop Environmment and press the space bar to select it.

highlight OK and press Enter to install the Graphical desktop environment. Looks like you forgot to select it when you installed the system.

The suggestion above to move to Debian Etch (Testing) is a good suggestion because you will end up with much newer versions of all the software than what Debian 3.1 provides..

Enjoy !!

I'd read up on those progarams before installing them, I'm willing to bet their not what you want

Here's how I would do it, I'm writing from memory so this may not work, download and burn debian etch release candidate 1

http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

You want the netinstall CD, Most probobly i386. Burn that and boot from the CD.

When you get controll of the install type installgui to get a nice graphical installation program. Partiton and install as you like it. when you are offered to chose extra packages select Desktop Environment if you want gnome. If you want KDE select nothing.

Assuming you've chosen KDE You'll find yourself at the command line, log in as root and type

apt-get install xorg kde kdm synaptic

and after the install you should be at you're GUI, if you're logged in as root just reboot and log in as yourself.

Thanks!

Thank you, guys! I just did what you suggested: installed Debian Etch instead of Sarge, the way you said, and now everything is working fine (GUI, internet browser, etc.)

Regards,

Hector.
