I am a Slackware fan too, so I can understand your impatience. But i think I know the root of your problem. You tried installing stable (woody) right? I did that too and the installation threw up lots of error and warning messages. Try Sarge instead, it should work fine.

I want to switch to debian.. not because I have any issues with slack.. I love it.. but.. I just kind of want a change and I don't have an extra comp that is decent.. I had some problems with the installer a few months ago, back when I had an extra hd just lying around.. Is the new installer really that much better?

If you can fdisk your way through partitioning Slack then Debian's install should be cake.
