Jessie, I won't cut fresh flowers for you...

I just installed Jessie, and I like it, but there seems to be an issue with shut down, log out, and restart.

I installed the KDE environment because I am used to it, I had KDE with openSUSE. To shut down, I must open a terminal and type /sbin/poweroff. Going to Leave, Shut Down, Restart, or Log Out results in no action.

Although I'm thinking that Jessie has a bug(s), my system could also be at fault.

My system:

DELL Optiplex 780
Dual core 3 GHz
1 TB HDD
8 GB Ram

Thanks,

What is the output of:
Code:
ls -l /sbin/poweroff
Does the system exhibit this problem if you use SysVinit rather than systemd?

Run these commands to generate a GRUB menu entry for SysVinit (under the "Advanced Options" section):
Code:
# apt-get install sysvinit
# update-grub
If this doesn't generate a GRUB menu entry you can use this kernel parameter:
Code:
init=/lib/sysvinit/init
EDIT: A more descriptive thread title would attract the attention of experts who know about this subject.

ls -l /sbin/poweroff

/sbin/poweroff -> /bin/systemmct1

I also ran
" apt-get install sysvinit"

Using the kernel parameter gave me no error.

Did you start up your system with SysVinit as PID1?

Check by running:
Code:
cat /proc/1/comm
Does your system shutdown from the KDE menu if you are using SysVinit as PID1?

The output of cat /proc/1/comm is systemd.

I start the system as a regular user with no options selected. I am the only user of the PC.

Usually DEs like KDE do not use the poweroff of systemctl commands directly, they use DBUS interfaces for shutting down/restarting the system. If you can't shutdown the system from within KDE it might be that KDE's Polkit daemon isn't running and you therefore simply aren't allowed to do that. What is the output of
Code:
ps aux|grep polkit

Output of ps aux|grep polkit is:

root 660 0.0 0.1 290540 8852 ? Ssl 12:42 0:00 /usr/lib/policy
kit-1/polkitd --no-debug
root 2577 0.0 128=724 2272 ptx/0 S_ 16:55 0:00 grep polkit

I obviously have not been clear enough.

After running `apt-get install sysvinit` and `update-grub` is there a menu entry in GRUB to start the system with SysVinit? It will be in the "Advanced Options" submenu.

If there isn't, highlight your usual Debian menu entry in GRUB, press "e" and add this to the end of the line that starts with "linux":
Code:
init=/lib/sysvinit/init
Then press <Ctrl>+x to boot the modified entry.

Check that SysVinit is being used to boot your system with the `cat /proc/1/comm` command.

If SysVinit is being used to boot your system, does the KDE shutdowm menu system work?

Ha! I see a mojor problem Head_on_a_Stick,

At the time I first posted this issue, my screen resolution made text so small that I was unable to see the hyphen after "update" for grub. The resolution was changed, and I now see advanced options when the Grub screen appears.

Back to square 2......

I tried entering run level 1 with sysvinit, and the output was "no more processes left in this run level." I got the same when I entered run level 2, just for kicks.

Should I download again with a different environment (MATE, or Cinnamon), or re-install?

Unfortunately sysv-rc made no difference with my shut down issue. Per what I've read about it, sysv-rc is useful.

Thanks so much Eddy1

So, have you checked if a Polkit agent is running?
