Internet Connection Problems

Have just installed Xandros Desktop 3.0 (Kernel 2.6.9, KDE 3.3) from the Cover of Linux Magazine. Thankfully had not trouble dual booting it with win XP Pro. However I have not been able to get it to connect it to the internet. I am using a D-link 302G ADSL modem trying to connect through the network port with no joy. I use the internet connection wizard which detects my network card ok and under TCP/IP settings I enter the ISPs DNS entry and everything else seems to be in order. However it is still unable to connect. I visited D-links website and couldnt see any support for linux - is this my problem that the modem simply wont work with linux?

Most ADSL providers now use Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE), kind of like digital dial-up. IP/DNS should be dynamic, and all you should have to provide the wizard is username and password. If this your case, Xandros wizard should support it. You have to choose pppoe as connection scheme, not static DSL. But even static DSL should work. Call your ISP and verify the numbers.

An easy out would be to purchase a cheap ADSL/Cable router. Then you would configure the router for internet connection, usually through any web browser. You can also get support from the router manufacturer as the OS in your PC has nothing to do with its operation. Xandros box would then be served by the router via DHCP, which I believe is its default. You also get a decent hardware firewall to boot.

I must add that it's maddening how so many so-called technology companies staff their help lines with idiot drones and refuse to support arguably the number two in the world desktop platform. Sheesh, what's it going to take?
