installing ser using dpkg

Sorry Im a bit of beginner at this. Im trying to install SER SIP Express Router on my Debian Linux machine. The instructions on the site are pretty simple, ie download and install as follows.

1) Download an RPM or debian package from iptel.org site

If you don't use an rpm or debian based distro, try our tar.gz'ed binaries
(ser-$(version)_$(os)_$(arch).tar.gz, e.g: ser-0.8.8_linux_i386.tar.gz).
If you use Solaris 8 you can try our solaris package.
If you use Gentoo Linux you do not have to download a package.

2) install the package
RPM:
rpm -i <package_name>
debian:
dpkg -i <package_name>

I have read in the HOwto for apt that I can put the site where I can download the file from in the sources-list file and then use the Debian package manager to manage it all. Sorry its all written in a generic way and cant work out where I copy files to and how dpkg finds it or is all magic. For example do I copy the ser file which is ser_0.8.12_i386.deb into my user file. What is the file ser_0.8.12.dsc that resides above the directory where the ser.deb file exists. You can see all of this in install section which provides the debian distributions.

Tks very much for any help.

you download the file into any directory, then while in that working directory you type:

Code:
dpkg -i (packagename.deb)
Of course you don't use (). If the package in in in your sources.list you can:

Code:
apt-get install (packagename)
Notice that when you apt-get you do NOT type .deb. If you are still confused feel free to repost again, I'll keep an eye out for you.
