Installing printers with Knoppix/Debian

When testing Knoppix, booting from the CD, I opened a window entitled:

Printing Manager - KDE Control Module

this had a toolbar with 'Add'. Using this I installed my Epson Ink Jet printer on my parallel port and my HP Laser Printer on my Network Print Server.

I then installed Knoppix on my hard disk using knx-hdinstall. (This installation reveals Knoppix's Debian origins.) I opened the same window but it had no toolbar or menus.

I presume that something vital has not been installed when I ran: knx-hdinstall.

Being a newbie I would appreciate some help.

Knoppix 3.3 has been updated.
Use "sudo knoppix-installer" in the shell prompt instead.
This might solve your problem, if you're willing to reinstall Knoppix to your hard drive.

Open a console window and use su to become root then /etc/init.d/cupsys start to start cups. Then try in KDE if it is still not there then open Konqueror and click on this http://localhost:631 and choose administer printers the user name will be root and the password will be the root password for your box then setup your printers. If the default ppd files that are used for the drivers do not work correctly then you may want to go to http://www.linuxprinting.org and check for the latest file and the setup instructions for cups for your make/model of the printer. You may also want to apt-get install mtink escputil to be able to check the ink levels on your Epson plus other things like cleaning the head.
