Unhappy Installing nVidia drivers

Hey guys. I'm somewhat new to linux. I have Debian 3.1r2. I'm having a problem installing the nVidia drivers for it. I bet you guys get this a lot, but I couldn't find a definitive answer giving me a course of action to take. When I try to run the installer, it gives me an error and stops.

Quote:
Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.o'. This happens most
frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or
improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs
from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as
rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from
obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s).
Thanks for any help as to what's causing this and what to do to rememdy it.

EDIT: I may have found something in the .log that could help.

Quote:
-> Kernel module load error: ./usr/src/nv/nvidia.o: kernel-module version
mismatch
./usr/src/nv/nvidia.o was compiled for kernel version 2.4.27
while this kernel is version 2.4.27-2-386.
What should I do?

Did you re-complie your kernel?

Or you just want to install nvidia?

I only want to install the driver, but if it means I have to recompile, I guess I will. What should I do?

I've decided to go with the logical way to go and I'm going back to kernel 2.4.27 as the error in the log suggested. I'll let you know if it works.
Thanks.
