You should get your hands on a set of Debian Sarge or Sid CD's. All the dependencies will be available on the CD's. If you can't download the CD's, you can buy them from someplace like debianvendor.org. Use the command "apt-cdrom add" to add each CD to the sources.list file. Then you can use "apt-get install kde" and you will be prompted for the CD's needed to resolve dependencies.

can you tell me what CD images I need to download? because I don't have enough money to purchase a pre-burned CD set.

http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimag...gdo-area/i386/

There are 13 CD's, but you probably only need the first 3 or 4. You should also read the Debian website documentation on how to set up jigdo to download images:

http://www.nl.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/

You can pick up a Debian Sarge double DVD set, from a very recent snapshot, for next
to nothing (assuming you have a DVD rom drive)

I've decided to forget about using a GUI and am now concentrating on installing MySQL.

Strange thread. You know you caan install Debian from a floppy image. Yo can build it easily, which is why I chose it. Then you can go without a gui. You'll have your 30 meg distro, so to speak...
