installing KDE 3.1.2

Okay, i put deb download.kde.org/stable/3.1.2/Debian stable main in my sources.list file. Then i did an apt-get update with no errors. Then i do apt-get install kde and i get a message saying that kde is already up to date. My current kde is version 2.2.2 Here's my sources.list file:

Code:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib

deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://download.kde.org/stable/3.1.2/Debian stable main

Is there something i'm doing wrong? I'm using Debian woody.

Hi,

i checked out the packages.gz from this server and there is no pseudo package called "KDE" so they don't provide installing kde with "apt-get install kde"

try to run a

apt-get upgrade

You are not really doing something wrong -- there is just no "kde" package in that pool. You have to fetch the individual packages that you like/need and select them. I'd start with the kdebase package, that should depend/recommend quite some. Also rather use a frontend like aptitude or dselect which knows about recommends of packages.

One thing that was needed to get it working good and not stumble into problems: First remove all kde 2.2 packages from your system before you install the kde 3.1.2 packages. The kde people weren't not able to provide good tested packages and working upgrade phases, unfortunately. I'm not sure if this still happens, but if you notice any problems think about it. Easiest way to purge every kde 2.2 packages from your system is to "apt-get remove --purge kdelibs3" -- quite every kde 2.2 package should have at least an indirect dependency on that library.

HTH & HAND,
Alfie

Syn-APT-ic... APT... Get it? (Or, apt-get it?) (groan)

It's a Gtk GUI frontend for APT. Read all (well, a little) about it here (Google is our friend )

Ab.
