Installing Debian via Knoppix HD install, bad idea???

I want to try Debian but have already had problems with the installer, last I checked the problems were unsolvable.

I've heard that installing Knoppix to your hard drive and then upgrading to a full Debian via apt-get, while being very easy, is a bad idea because of the way Knoppix arranges directories would cause problems in the future...or something? Anybody care to elaborate?

I'm not sure about Knoppix - I haven't tried it, but Mepis is a really smooth way of getting a full Debian system. It boots from CD, giving a KDE desktop running from the CDROM. Then, there is an install icon on the desktop. Hit that and Mepis installs to your Hard Drive from the KDE desktop - brilliant. I've had no problems at all using apt to get and keep it up to date. www.mepis.org

good good, I'll check their site out.
If I were to install this "Mepis" and then upgrade to Sid would I have a standard Debian install? If I run into problems(I will lol) I want to be able to say "it's Debian" and have anybody with Debian be able to guide me through exactly how to solve problems. I'm not adept with linux enough yet to have a non-standard distro(Mepis, JAMD, ect....all the smaller, rather modified distros).

I'm looking for a way to install Debian without using the Debian installer, it doesn't agree with my hardware at all.

Yep, as far as I can see, it's Debian. Don't forget, they have help forums at Mepis, too, so you can also ask there.
