installing debian ia64 on amd64 laptob

Hi!

I have bought an amd 64 notebook (hp pavilion zv 6068) and I can't get to install the debian ia64 distribution. While attempting to boot, I get the error message 'Unable to load kernel image: linux'). However I have no trouble installing the 32 bit version.

Thank you very much for your help!

IA64 is meant for Intel Itanium processors, not for AMD64 processors.

You need to install the AMD64 distribution of Debian.

Good luck!!

ia64 is not compatible with AMD processors. It's meant for Intel 64bit processors.

Thank you very much!

This was indeed a ... stupid question.

This means that, so far, there is no debian distribution available for AMD64. I have seen no other debian distribution with a name suggesting 64 bits. This is why I jumped on ia64.

So, in order to work in 64 bits, I will have to use another distribution.

Thanks again!

Google for Debian AMD64. There's an unofficial port of Debian Sarge (currently stable) for AMD64. An official AMD64 distribution is planned for Debian Etch (currently testing).

Many thanks!

I have found it!
Debian running on an AMD 64 is indeed a nice idea and I would have been disapointed if it had not been possible.

Thanks for your help.
