installing DEBIAN for 1st time

I have two PCs and want to install Devian on them to configure my own network.

Desktop

AMD 64 Athlon X2 Dual Coro Processor 4800 +
RAM 2G
2HD - 160G each
ALREADY RUNING ON WINXP-PRO


Laptop – hp pavilion 2135

T5500 Processor intel core 2 duo
Ram 2Gb 667 mhz DDR
1HD - 120GB
ALREADY RUNING ON WINXP-PRO

What supported architectures do I have to install on my pc ?

AMD64 ?
Intel x86 or other one ?

How many DVDs are required for the installation and how many CDs ? What’s the best option for you. I read about it, and I could tell that just first one DVD is needed to be downloaded.

You can install either the i386 or AMD64 versions.
Personally i would go AMD64,but thats just my preference.
Do you have a good broadband connection?
If so i would recommend the netinstall disc,here's a link:

Have you thought about which branch of Debian you want to run?
Many people(myself included!) run the 'testing' branch and find it quite stable.

I am thinking about to download 5.0.0 installation's DVDs as many as I need, burn the ISOs and boot them from my DVD unit. I think this is the more suitable way. Im not sure if this responds your quest.

Do I install the AMD64 as you recommend on both computers ? or just on the Desktop and x86 on the Laptop?

How many AMD64's would I need and how many x86's if so?

I believe that most packages you need to do an install are on DVD1.

You can install AMD64 on both machines if you want.

I will Partition before booting.

What is the best file sistem to format the partition for linux ?

ext 2 or ext 3 ?

You'll only need to format 2 partitions: / and /home. The swap partition doesn't need formatting, just tell the installer it's used for swap. As for the filesystem: unless you want to handle many large files (GB range) ext3 will do just fine. Ext2 and ext3 are pretty similar, the only (major) difference is the presence of a journaling log on the latter, to store actions done to files. This prevents (excessive) data-loss in case of a power failure. Other alternatives are ReiserFS, JFS and XFS. The latter 2 are better equipped dealing with large files like video-data. For now ext3 is your best choice.

First DVD's download is done (debian-500-amd64-DVD-1.iso).I used a download manager and did it excelent.It took around 4hrs on a 2mb band width.I used a Hungarian ftp server that you can find at http://www.linux.org/dist/download.html?ID=8. I will proceed to burn ISOs and format ext3 with a partition magic and then will reboot by DVD unit to install debian.

I installed Debian on my Pcs I before mentioned.I would like now to install linux debian or other one on another PC. It's an old one.

ram 396MB
hd 10GB
cdRom Unit (not DVD) so it means CDs are a must.

it's already partitioned on two.

5gb NTFS running on w2k
5gb for a linux

I would like you to recommend me which other distribution would work fine on this PC in order to be integrated on a network with those are already running on Debian 5.0, otherwise your opinion about installing same debian 5.0 that I installed on the others PCs ?

If Devian is all right, How many i386 ISOs'CDs should I download to install Debian 5.0 ? I was once told to download only the first 3.

3-
If you suggest some different distribution from debian, pls tell me, how many ISOs to download ?

with a broadband connection I would just download the netsintall.iso That's aboutthe only media I ever use to install Debian, rather than downloading husge Iso full of packages I will never need or use..

Debian should work just fine on that PC, although I might install a different desktop XFCE, or LXDE rather than the default gnome.

Thanks for the answer "farslayer" but I would like to know anyway how may CDs would I need just in case make decision of using them to install.

I never use more than One CD/DVD, because any package I need can be automatically downloaded from the online repositories using aptitude, or synaptic..

I wouldn't worry about more than ONE CD unless I did not have access to broadband for the machine I'm installing on. with broadband Like I said I would use the 160 MB Netinstall.iso rather than dowloading large isos full of packages that are possibly outdated before I download the CD image.
