Installing debian 5.02 odd problems
 
Hey folks: I've found an interesting problem.

I reciently bought the entire 33 CD collection of Debian 5.02 (One of my systems is too old to have a DVD drive). I tried it by installing it on my main system. It used the first 4 CDs for files, didn't access the net more than about 15 minutes (when it said 'configuring apt'), and about an hour, it installed perfectly. Then tried it on the netbook.

Nothing I've tried has worked; it's always the same. Installing goes fine, till the point it asks for a mirror, I say 'yes' then after the 15 minute accessing the net (I'm assuming then it's downloading repositories) It wants to spend 2+ hours downloading files. If you pull the cable, it takes a number of files off the CD, then freezes until it gets the cable back (sounds like a child, no? :). From there, if I give the cable back, it installs only the command line version.

This is the reason I bought all 33 disks. So it doesn't HAVE to go to the net - especially for this one laptop -But I can't figure how to make it install from the disks only

Can you all help?

Add the cds using apt-cdrom, do man apt-cdrom to figure out the commands.

apt-cdrom is used to add a new CDROM to APTs list of available sources.  apt-cdrom takes care
      of determining the structure of the disc as well as correcting for several possible mis-burns
      and verifying the index files.

      It is necessary to use apt-cdrom to add CDs to the APT system, it cannot be done by hand.
      Furthermore each disk in a multi-cd set must be inserted and scanned separately to account for
      possible mis-burns.

      Unless the -h, or --help option is given one of the commands below must be present.

      add
          add is used to add a new disc to the source list. It will unmount the CDROM device, prompt
          for a disk to be inserted and then procceed to scan it and copy the index files. If the
          disc does not have a proper disk directory you will be prompted for a descriptive title.

          APT uses a CDROM ID to track which disc is currently in the drive and maintains a database
          of these IDs in /var/lib/apt/cdroms.list

If you can't download the shot let me know and i will try to do it different.
Most simple would to simply unplug the net-cable before you start to install.

Don't add any CD's during installation. Use CD No1 and add the rest of the gang after the installation went thru.

If things go wrong during installation you might always go back a few steps and correct what you (think you) did wrong. HIt the tab-key to get on <go back> and choose where you want to continue.
