Installing CMAKE removed Flowblade and Lightworks - Parrot OS - Mate
 

I recently installed Parrot OS on my laptop, which uses the Mate DE. I chose the security spin, to get the security features; but I also wanted the studio features, as I stms edit video and audio; so I installed the same studio tools that the Parrot Studio spin includes. The affected apps are Flowblade and Lightworks. I was really looking forward to working with Lightworks, as it looks really powerful, with a well designed UI.

Well needless to say, I eventually installed smthg that interfered with these apps; that smthg was CMAKE. I installed cmake, so I could compile grub-customizer, as well as other source. cmake uses libcurl4, whereas Flowblade and Lightworks uses libcurl3. When installing cmake from synaptic, I was NOT informed that this substitution was going to be made; and as was unilaterally forced to accept having Flowblade and Lightworks removed.

One solution would be to just dual-boot Parrot Security and Parrot Studio on the same drive, which of course I can do; but I hate dual-booting, mostly because of the doubling of system maintenance. DB systems are fancy and appealing; but a headache to maintain. Another possibility would be to remove cmake and reinstall Flowblade and Lightworks, then repeat this maddening cycle, whenever I need to compile smthg else. Unfortunately, neither Flowblade or Lightworks has a flatpak or appimage available. All informed insights appreciated.

Final thoughts; I think that the move toward containerized apps is inevitable and long overdue as dev environments as well as DEs and OSs, even within POSIX, differ greatly. Windows has a decided advantage here, as Windows has only one DE all of your apps will work on all of you builds. Within POSIX, we're, more often than not, forced to DB, or rebuild the distro; which is disastrous for the out-of-box experience, especially if you've got real work to do.

parrot os seems to be not very well maintained, but its combination of a beautiful desktop and the security buzzword seems to attract many users.
i have stumbled upon quite many complaints about parrotos, and all i can say is take it to the maintainers. it's not fair that others should fix their distro, which seems hardly more than a vanity affair.

It's clear that you know what you're doing and I appreciate your time. You're right on all counts. Parrot OS is beautiful to look at and it appears to be poorly maintained. You're also right, that it's unfair to offload their maintenance issues on third parties. You're also right, that I should take it to the maintainers. That's the problem. There aren't any... I've been trying for the last week to join their support forum and the only one who replies is "discobot." It's abundantly clear, that the creators of this project have taken on too much, as they're "not" staffed, much less under-staffed. What Parrot does do, it does well roob, as long as you don't tinker with it; but like most community maintained distros, there's some broken stuff.

I like the security and anonymity features of Parrot and the excellent DE environment. I've tried Kali in the past; but trying to create an acceptably organized and user friendly desktop with this distro is madness; it's not going to happen.

I'm more than ready to step-up to an enterprise distro. I want the privacy anonymity and pen-testing apps that come with Kali and Parrot; but I also want to code and edit on the same distro. Please, may I have your recommendations?

you can code and edit on any distro, i don't really see a problem there.

you should be aware that offensive security stuff does not go well with desktop usage (web browsing and other internet-using software), that's why kali is designed as a live distro; do your pentesting stuff, then reboot. it's really mauch safer, more private and anonymous that way.
now for the desktop anonymity, i believe there's tails and maybe qubesos.
but of course ideally any linux distro should be safe to use, so my idea is to use any distro, and then take the responsibility of making and keeping it secure.

...many users here say that security is a way of doing things, not something you install once, then it's done. a constant process. learning.
