Installer freezing after security updates

I'm trying to install Debian testing with a CD onto this old laptop I have. It's installed the base system and rebooted, and now it's trying to do some configuration. Everything works fine until I get an error saying that it can't access the security updates, which isn't surprising since it's looking on the internet and the laptop has no internet access.

But when I hit "ok" it just sits there and doesn't do anything. How do I get past this point?

Try Ctrl+C but technically it should come back to you after a time and tell you it cannot access the net.

ctrl-c does nothing, and I've waited a good five or ten minutes on it and nothing has happened.

There is obviously a problem. If the laptop is old I would suggest a woody install.
