Installation Crash

Hello all, I am fairly new to linux (I've tried out Red Hat and Knoppix off and on for a while), and I was really interested in Debian and many of its features (especially apt-get). I finally got the ISOs working, went to install, and when loading sd_module when trying to detect CDROM hardware (even though everything is on my CD/DVD drive), it seems to crash. It stays and 91% for over a half hour. Is this normal and should I wait longer? Or is it something with my hardware? Thank you.

Hmm.. that is definately not normal. I had no problems detecting cd-rom hardware..

Did you try it again? I did have a problem a while ago. I had the error "Cannot retrieve package". I later discovered that the drive was broken.

It could very well be the hardware, or the way you burned the isos. If you have already tried booting up from the CD a second time, I would suggest that you burn the disc at a lower speed.

Hope I helped.

if you have another pc try it on that one. it might be a bad iso, did you check the md5 sum before you burned the cd?

4x to 8x should be ok. Do you have another computer that you could try with? Otherwise, as jmarshall85 said, you should make sure the md5 sums are ok. I assumed you had already done that.

I know it sounds bad, but I haven't ever really used checksums before. If anyone could help me out with that, I'll verify those are okay and proceed to test it on another box. Thanks!

So are you burning the CDs on a Windows or Linux computer? I've never done it in Linux, but I might be able to assist you in Windows.

Try out this program to check the sums, let me know if you have any problems.

Thanks, I unpacked the first ISO and ran it, and came up with 26 errors, with less than half of them being checksums that didn't match. Would that be enough for a re-download?

If the checksum is off by even one character, you should consider redownloading.

Try a different mirror this time

ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/debian-cd/

I have exactly the same problem. I've tried the DVD-images as well as the network install-CD, but still the same freeze when "Detecting hardware..."

(I have tried "linux26" and "expert26" at the boot prompt without succes...)

I suspect there is a problem when installing to a SATA-disk, but I dont know.

Any suggestions?

Specs:
Abit NF7-S (nForce2, si3112 SATA controller)
AMD XP2500+
6600GT AGP
200G Seagate SATA
120G Seagate SATA

I'm still downloading at the moment, thanks for the mirror. I also have SATA drives, hopefully it will work for me though.

Do you have a link to a good net-install image? I'm having the same problem with this image (I downloaded a new one) and it is just a net-install. Thank you.
