Installation

OK. I'm completly new to Linux. I just got Mandrake 10.0 working. Now I'm interested in trying Debian. I'm confused by all of the files I see on www.linuxiso.org. Do I burn all of the ISOs to a DVD or how do I work that out? Any advice would be great! Thanks.

You burn each CD iso to an individual CD, and then install it like Mandrake

hum ... Im all out of CD-Rs ... it would work burning to all ISOs to a DVD at once? Should I just use a DVD?

You can download the full stable release on DVD using Jigdo

There is a howto on that site. The DVD release consists of 2 DVDs, but I think you only need the first one to do a normal installation. You can get other packages from the Internet using the apt system.

No, you have to use CD's if burning official Debian ISO's.

Just burn the first CD and install it from the NET if you have broadband.

My problem is that I don't have any blank CD-R's ... Just DVDR

If you are on a high speed connection and it sounds like it if you are considering DVD download then go to the Debian website and get the network install floppies if I recall correctly boot.img, root.img and net-card.img and make the disks this of course assumes that you have floppies.

HELLO !!!!!!!!!!!! Did you read my post ????? I told you that you can download the DVDs using Jigdo. Just click on the link and download the DVDs, burn them and install Debian.

Hello!!!!! I never saw your post so just calm down!

How am I supposed to download? Each file is only like 800KB I'm confused.

I followed the jigdo link and read quickly. Seems you'll need to get the jigdo app and use that to download the dvd images.

Go here: http://atterer.net/jigdo/ to download jigdo for your OS and install it.

Then go here: http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/ and read the "How to download an image with jigdo" section.

As for the size of each file...read this:

Of course, a "normal" Debian mirror does not carry any CD images, so how can jigdo download them there? jigdo achieves this by downloading individually all the files that are on the CD. In the next step, all these files are assembled in one big file which is an exact copy of the CD image. However, all this happens behind the scenes - all that you need to do is tell the download tool the location of a ".jigdo" file to process.

Hope that helps.

I didn't mean to sound rude. I'm pretty stressed out because I have to finish my Master Thesis within 2 weeks. :D

It's cool! I totally understand. Good luck!
