You can apt-get source, change PREFIX in debian/rules and build the deb and install it.

I try it, but when I modify the debian/rules AND the source (I need to make some mod on the original source), when I launch dpkg -b the tar.bz2 downloaded with apt-get source is RE-unzipped and it overwrite my mods...
Anyway to use the --root flag?
