Install linux

Have HP computer with 17.04 installed only. It has too many bugs that are not being corrected.I purchased a usb with 14.04. Changed to legacy and usb boot, still goes to the start up desktop. Also tried UEFI. 17.04 is the only one that will install. Can a usb be installed through the terminal . Thanks

I haven't heard of a way to install what's on a Live usb flash drive and get the installation working through the terminal.

Maybe consider Ubuntu 16.04 instead.

Xubuntu 16.04 (based on Ubuntu) has been very stable for me:-
16.04 is supported until 2018.

Any reason you don't want to use 18?

Anyway. If you disabled uefi and secure boot (maybe csm enable) and you power up with usb installed, go directly to bios and see if usb shows up as a hard drive order. Did you test this usb on some other similar computer?

Why would you buy a usb with 14 on it by the way?
