Install issues with older pentium 225mhz and 6gb hdd
 

Hello all,

I decided to test out the Net install of debian and i must say the install went pretty flawlessly. However i am having quite an issue now that it is installed.
The computer boots up and gets me to GRUB fine and their are 2 kernels listed. One is normal 2.4.18 - k7 and the other is 2.4.18 - k7 Recover Mode. ( I simply did the default install )
I am using the ext3 filesystem as well. The problem is when i select either kernel it begins to boot into the OS but then it reboots. Each time and each kernel i try it simply reboots my system. It is very annoying and i have browsed other forums and have not found an answer.

The specs on my machine are as follows:

Pentium 225mhz
80 MB Ram
6gb IDE HDD
Samsung CD-ROM
AT form factor motherboard, case
D-Link 530TX+ Network card
S3 Trio64V+ Video card
Older ISA sound card

I greatly appreciate each and everyone who simply looks at this. To those who may offer help i would like to thank you all in advance.

Which cd image are you installing from? As far as I know, Debian doesn't offer a specialized release just for AMD chips.

If you want the cleanest install possible, start with stable (Woody, and you can still choose a 2.4 kernel) to get everything up and running. You can "upgrade" to testing or unstable later.

I belived it is from this sarge beta 3 installer buisness card iso. One of my buddies said it was good so i gave it a whirl. I forgot where he obtained it but it is only about 36MB in size. Still having same issues and am still lost so any help is appreciated

Well, Sarge isn't ready yet, and its installer is still in beta. I know it's always easy to say "start over with a different disc," but in this case I think it's good advise. I'd start from Woody #1 and upgrade to sarge post-install.

Thanks, I was speaking to a few other linux gurus that i speak with and they told me the same thing. To use the woody disc. I plan on doing that today. Thanks for your help

Oh by the way, since you obviously know what your talking about, do you mind giving me a link to the net install ISO image you used? So that way i know im on the right track. Thanks

No problem.

I like linuxiso.org, as they have images for just about any distro you could possibly want. They list seven cds worth of material, but if you're doing a net install, you only need the first one. Just pop it in, type 'bf24' at the boot prompt (if you want a halfway recent kernel), and you're off.

Thanks again ill have to try that. I was browsing Debians site and i seen some mini vanilla net install iso's and also a 186 MB woody net install iso. Would either of these be good? I have a generic boot cd laying around from 3.0r1 so wouldnt using it make my system somewhat out of date? Should i use it? or just download the 3.0r2 cd. Guess im asking if tis easier just to download the cd or upgrade an older system. Well youve done an awful lot and helped me, Once again i appreicate every bit of it. Thanks again
