Install console only (file server) + raid

Hello.

I am new to linux. I would like to install Debian on one of my computers to serve as a storage place in Microsoft Networking (Samba is a "must be"). It's mostly for back up and file sharing. There is no need to install any graphics - command line only.

My qestion is, do I have to download all 14 cd images of Sarge to acomplish this? Or only some of them?

Another question - is it (relatively) easy to configure software raid in such a configuration?

You can download the Debian Sarge netinstall cd and then install any extra packages from online repos using apt.

You might want to read some of the books dealing with linux server security. Such as "Linux Server Security" or "Hardening Linux". You only want to install the bare minimum for servers. You shouldn't be installing any extras. Although most of those disks are probably for KDE and Gnome which you aren't installing anyway.

Thanks. I'll try the netinstall.
The server is only for local purposes - it will be connected with internet connection shared by other computer, so it won't be visible from outside (it's behind a firewall). Anyway I will look into server security books out of pure interest.
Thanks again.
