[SOLVED]Install ati-drivers fails with "Failed to compile kernel module"

I am running Debian Etch with linux-image-2.6.15-1-k7, linux-headers-2.6.15-1-k7. To get my ATI 9600 XT running I downloaded the latest propetary drivers from their website. During install I get an error message, here's the complete message:

[Message] Kernel Module : Trying to install a precompiled kernel module.
[Message] Kernel Module : Precompiled kernel module version mismatched.
[Message] Kernel Module : Found kernel module build environment, generating kernel module now.
ATI module generator V 2.0
patching 'highmem.h'...
assuming new VMA API since we do have kernel 2.6.x...
doing Makefile based build for kernel 2.6.x and higher line 852: make: command not found
build failed with return value 127
[Error] Kernel Module : Failed to compile kernel module - please consult readme.
How can I solve this?

Solved this by adding the line "deb sarge-backports main contrib non-free" to my sources list and install fglrx + fglrx-kernel-src from there.

same issues with me on debian-etch, k7 image and headers and radeon 9800PRO

unfortunately that repo actually provide a fglrx till only Xorg <= 6.9.x and etch now use 7.0

I am also hardly glued with this darn ati unability to provide decent (onto windows) if not trashy or not working at all (onto linux) drivers. Lets' try to figure out what will be my next vidocard brand...
