Info: Debian Wheezy on the way

I was curious about the next testing codename after Squeeze becomes stable. I finally tracked it down. For those interested in such things here it is:
Quote:

On 3 September 2010, the name of the release after squeeze was announced[58]: it will be called wheezy, after the the rubber toy penguin with a red bow tie in Toy Story 2.
I like the idea of a penguin with a red bow tie but the name is somewhat... sickly? Oh well. I'll get used to it. ;)

Thanks for posting jdk,I also wondered what the next Testing release was going to be called.
Now we know!.
Good to see you back on the Debian forum by the way :hattip:.

I think they need to get past the whole Toy Story thing. Move on to Doctor Who.

Debian release after Wheezy could be. Debian Dalek, Debian Cyberman, Debian Master...

Release name ~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will continue to use Toy Story character names for squeeze's successor. The next release will be called ``wheezy'' (the rubber toy penguin with a red bow tie), and will be Debian 7.0. Cheers Neil

List of Toy Story characters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quote:

Wheezy, often known as Wheezy the Penguin, is a rubber squeeze toy penguin with a red bow tie. He is voiced by the late Joe Ranft.

Woody found Wheezy after Andy's mom puts him on the shelf in Toy Story 2. He was about to be sold because his "squeaker" was broken, but Woody rescues him from the yard sale, only to be left behind and subsequently stolen by Al. When Buzz Lightyear plans a rescue, Wheezy, held by Rocky and Robot, begs Buzz to rescue Woody. While held by Rocky, Wheezy waves goodbye to Buzz and his rescue troops as they leave on their mission. At the end of the film, he gets a new "squeaker" (he credits Mr. Shark for his contribution) and sings the ending theme of the movie.

In one outtake, when the microphone thrown by Mr. Mike strikes Wheezy, Wheezy apologizes for "hurting" his equipment and reminds him to aim at his flippers, although stating he is not a very perfect catch. Another outtake shows Wheezy inadvertently "swallowing" his recently-replaced squeaker when he gets struck by Mr. Mike's microphone again.

Wheezy also got his name from having Asthma.

Wheezy often sings in a deep voice for all of his friends (provided by the late Robert Goulet).

Wheezy was sold at a yard sale 4 years after Toy Story 2 and only appeared in the archive footage of Andy as a kid in Toy Story 3. Woody, it is implied, was no longer able to help Wheezy escape this time as he did 4 years earlier. He does make an appearance in Toy Story 3: The Video Game, where is voiced by Charlie Adler, who was also rumored to voice him in Toy Story 3 (which did not turn out in the film at all).
For those that do not know why Debian uses Toy Story names:
ToyStory - Debian Wiki
Quote:

Toy Story was released by Pixar November 22nd, 1995. One year later Debian 1.1 was released. Bruce Perens was the DebianProjectLeader then and also worked for Pixar. He started the tradition of naming Debian releases after Toy Story characters.

Cheers Troop. I never left but was a bit less active for a bit. I did lurk, though. :)

"What are you running now?"
"Wheezy."
"Not surprised. Stop smoking. But I still want to know what you're running?"

Dutch Master 09-09-2010 06:37 PM

"I'm not running! I'm in a chair talkin' to you!" :D

(sorry, couldn't resist ;))

brianL 09-09-2010 06:50 PM

I'm waiting for the squeezy to wheezy upgrade how-tos.

brianL 09-10-2010 02:03 AM

No, seriously, I like Debian. I might dual-boot it again on my desktop with Slack, when Wheezy is released. 64-bit with multilib possibly.

I agree with the post to move to Dr. Who titles. I'd love to run Debian Sontaran

evo2 09-12-2010 08:28 PM

I don't think a farm of Debian boxen were used to render any CG on Dr Who...

Evo2.

Bondi,
I've seen the new BBC version of Sherlock Holmes (the one with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman) and felt the inspiration. Wouldn't it be wonderful if versions of Debian were codenamed after characters in S.H. I'd love to be running Debian Lestrade. Sounds so much better than Debian Wheezy. ;)
Ciao,
jdk

Way off topic but the best Sherlock Holmes was BBC's with Jeremy Britt. Sadly Britt passed away very young. But every time I saw one of these episodes I was there with the real Holmes.

Oh, and what the heck, leave the Toy Story name. I like them. But Dr. Who is a good idea.

rsciw 09-17-2010 09:56 AM

Why not Terminator names?

Sounds much better, as in
"What are you running there?"
"Debian T-1000" or "Debian T-Triple Eight"

:)

How about old games...

Debian BFG2K from Doom2...maybe not
