improper Windowmaker installation on sarge

Hi,
I recently installed my first debian, sarge. I had kept my home intact during this install, so all the previous configuration files were still present in my home dir. Since my favorite Windowmaker wasn't installed, I installed it using apt-get. But when I log into it, I find that everything is very messed up. I get a couple of error messages when the windowmaker starts about not finding a certain file or directory. None of my previous shortcuts seem to work. Even the standard "alt+tab" doesn't work properly.
The standard icons don't work. Clicking on one of these gives me the error

Error
Could not execute command
"/usr/X11R6/GNUstep/Applications/WPrefs.app/WPrefs"

And there is no /usr/X11R6/GNUstep directory present.

The biggest problem is that I can't find the configuration directory. I had one ~/.gnustep/library/windowmaker directory with mandrake 10.1. But this seems to have been deleted during installation. What additional steps are required? Do I need to create my own configuration directory?

Your configuration files and directory may have been overwritten. Since you're in Debian, you could try dpkg-reconfigure gnustep to see if Debian can reset the base install.

you may have a GnuStep dir from the mandrake install lying about in your home folder -that may mess up the configuration. Rename this and then reinstall Windowmaker and see if that helps.

Window Maker should create ~/GNUstep directory automatically when you first start it. If there's no such directory, then Window Maker apparently uses some other configuration directory under your home directory from your previous distro (like coyopil suggested). At first you should exit your Window Maker session, then find that configuration directory, delete it and start Window Maker again.

In Debian the WPrefs shortcut should point to /usr/lib/GNUstep/System/Applications/WPrefs.app/WPrefs. If there's no such directory, you can type "su" in a terminal window to become root, and then run "updatedb". Then become a normal user again and run "locate WPrefs".
