ifup eth0 failed, failed to bring eth0

I tried checking "/etc/network/interface" which has
----------------------------
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto lo
iface eth0 inet static
address xx
netmask xx
network xx
broadcast xx
gateway xx
-----------------------------

and tried checking "lspci -v", also inserted in /etc/modules.conf -
alias ne2k-pci eth0

Prior to all above, I had configured my 2.6.8 kernel by "make config" which had made me to select respective network options, maybe I missed something for "eth0".

I am getting following errors as now when I do -
/etc/init.d/networking restart
----------
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
eth0: Error while getting interface flags
Failed to bring up eth0
----------------------------

I wish to have some clue.
