Iceweasel, Youtube and general gripes

I'm running a KDE4 GUI under the latest Debian - like I update every day, though I sometimes use other GUIs, mostly XFCE. Iceweasel won't load on anything but even though I can't find it on system manager won't load again because it says it is running already. That is odd in any case, since when did running a program prevent a second instance? In any case, it's the same over all GUIs. It could be that it just times out. I could fix load time restrictions in KDE3 but I don't know the KDE4 controls or what to edit direct. Don't talk about Konqueror because although it loads, it takes minutes not seconds, to get any internet access.

Second, Youtube was always a bit iffy but shows pink loading but will not play under Galeon, Epiphany and Kazehakase. It used to run on Iceweasel uder KDE3 but - I've gone into that already.

Anybody have experience of these problems and found their way out of them? Could be that something fundamental got damaged when KDE4 came in unexpectedly.

I do not have kde4 installed but iceweasel works fine here in sid using lxde. A lot of people that i chat with in irc are using kde4 with iceweasel with no problems.

$ apt-cache policy iceweasel
iceweasel:
Installed: 3.5.1-1
$ apt-cache policy flashplayer-mozilla
flashplayer-mozilla:
Installed: 1:10.0.32.18-0.0

I would try moving your .mozilla dir or if you can get iceweasel to start from a terminal try creating a new profile by starting it with iceweasel --profilemanager

The flash issue with other browsers sounds like you are using either swfdec or gnash both of which suck, I would install flashplayer-mozilla from debian-multimedia.org.

Yeah use the propprietary software from adobe, the other ones don't have full 10 support, or it is buggy. If your on AMD64 I'd reccomend using nspluginwrapper.

Yes. Thanks. You've brought some memories back. I had all this problem right at the start with KDE3 and fixed it. Of course KDE4 has unfixed all that and gone back to the standard that never did work.

$ apt-cache policy iceweasel
iceweasel:
Installed: 3.0.12-1
Candidate: 3.0.12-1
Version table:
*** 3.0.12-1 0
500 http://ftp.ie.debian.org squeeze/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3.0.6-1 0
500 http://ftp.ie.debian.org lenny/main Packages
500 http://http.us.debian.org lenny/main Packages
$ apt-cache policy flashplayer-mozilla
W: Unable to locate package flashplayer-mozilla

Now there's two interesting results.

You may have a stale pid file in /tmp. If you log out of KDE4 and log into a VT as root, you can delete all files and directories owned by a regular user.

find /tmp -not -user root -exec rm -r '{}'\;

You can also start firefox (iceweasel) from the command line. Look at "iceweasel --help". There should be an option to use the profile manager. Then you can add a profile.

One oddity is if you ssh to a second computer and launch it then. The program runs on the local machine instead of the remote machine as you would expect.

Note: I have firefox, so I hope I used the correct spelling for Debians branded program.

Right now I'm trying to instal Ice~l 3.5.1-1 from here http://glandium.org/blog/?p=391 but it wants a couple others available from the same place and so far xulrunner-1.9 seems to be hanging and not coming in. I'm saving it and see if I can open from desktop instead of automatically. It gets as far as 'Checking package status'. That is one of the annoying things, when something poses a problem, changing it will need something else and then that something else will produce inexplicable and undefined problems of its own.
'No package supplies xulrunner 1.9' Despite having just installed it and working off a .deb

It's not available on the Debian site, so my usual daily run of 'Update Manager' (can't find a 'help' to getits proper name) does not help.

glandium.org Blog Archive How to install Iceweasel 3.5 on Lenny - http://glandium.org/blog/?p=406

Better yet just use Firefox, even with iceweasel at 3.5.1 in experimental it is already a version behind Firefox.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.2) Gecko/20090729 Firefox/3.5.2
