Iceweasel 5 - fast and stable (post your feedback).

It's actually in beta state. I have installed it today and it's very lovely. I had no problems whatsoever. Of course I did it by means of http://mozilla.debian.net/.

Those who might be interested in testing this thing, but don't know how to, are not sure how to set things up, here's a quick how to, even if it's explained at Debian Mozilla pretty well, I always stay surprised with some questions people ask, so it may be good to post it here too;

If you're concerned about security, check if you have debian-keyring and debian-archive-keyring packages installed. If not, obviously, install them.

Open terminal, become root and type;
Code:

wget -O- -q http://mozilla.debian.net/archive.asc | gpg --import
Code:

gpg --export -a 06C4AE2A | sudo apt-key add -
Open your sources list and add a line;
Code:

deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ squeeze-backports iceweasel-5.0
Change the line above if you're using "sid" to;
Code:

deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ experimental iceweasel-5.0
Run;
Code:

apt-get update
Code:

apt-get install -t squeeze-backports iceweasel
You'll be running Iceweasel 5 beta, aka Firefox 5 beta.

Thanks, I am running update/upgrades right now on this install (testing) and on the other on this drive (sid) in chroot so I will add that and change my sid over to Iceweasel 5.

Sounds like FUN. Want to see what it looks like.

Hey, widget, mate, that's good to hear!

If you're gonna do this on "sid" at the end you should run;
Code:

apt-get install -t experimental iceweasel

craigevil 06-04-2011 12:19 PM

$ apt-cache policy iceweasel

Iceweasel is the browser I play around with when I am bored, 99% of the time I use Firefox, and rarely Chrome or opera. I suck at AngryBirds. :)

Had it in about 5 minutes after my post.

One of my boinc projects has few an far between check points and if you pause the thing you can loose better than an hour of work. I have to wait until all of the active work units are done before I leave here to visit that install.

They are now done but I have to do some things around here and I have suspended the unstarted WUs from that project so that I can go play on some of my other installs. The one with the new Iceweasel gets a good workout today. Timing was perfect.

Have to see what it looks like. 4 doesn't really blow my skirt up. I figure 5 will be better.

Better get back to work so I can play later.

My My will have to play with this more. Upgrade to 5 went smooth. Everything seems to work. Setting were all kept.

Looks very good.

That's good to hear too!

I've checked your profile here. So you're a woman, a pilot and you're using Debian "sid" with custom kernel.

Man, that sounds like fun! :D ^

cynwulf 06-06-2011 04:02 AM

Looks and behaves exactly the same as 4 to me. Considering they're trying to get to version 7 before the end of the year, this is actually a "linux kernel v3" type situation... it's a change in the release cycle, so 5, 6 and 7 could be considered e.g. '4.5' or '4.6', etc. Equally 3.5 and 3.6 could have been considered 4 and 5 respectively... it's just 'numbers'.

Either that or a spambot that's had an exceptionally good run...

It may seem so, but to note just some changes;

Added support for CSS animations
Added support for switching Firefox development channels
The Do-Not-Track header preference has been moved to increase discoverability
Improved canvas, JavaScript, memory, and networking performance
Improved standards support for HTML5, XHR, MathML, SMIL, and canvas
Improved spell checking for some locales
Improved desktop environment integration for Linux users

And a few hundred bugs fixed; http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox...s/buglist.html

So, it seems better than 4.

Please excuse these very nice if somewhat behind the times geeks. My wife has a System 76 Laptop running Ubuntu 10.04. All she has run since 08 is Linux (we "upgraded our computer and the new one came with Vista - enough to switch the most stubborn to Linux unless brain dead).

She wanted a Laptop so I got here a good one that was preinstalled and supported as all Linux friendly (it is).

She is quite a bit younger than I am but we are both a bit on the "old" side to be switching. Has not been hard at all and a lot less stress than Win JerryLewis Pro.

If Ubuntu had more women on board they might (slight might) be more sensible.

My dear friend widget posted a link you should visit. I've been recently browsing a little through Debian Women profiles and they are all very lovely. Alice Ferrazzi is most active I believe, she's really lovely. :D

Hi guys, how to report a Iceweasel 5 bug?

I have Debian 6 Squeeze, and install the latest Iceweasel version from mozilla.debian.net, I install and all is fine, work fine to four weeks, but now when open a any tab in the same main window, these open and a few seconds the tab leave these iceweasel main window and open automatically a new iceweasel window.

I reinstall iceweasel 5, but the problem remain.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance.

Four weeks, are you kidding?
After some 4 minutes I got the first crash! Deinstall/Reinstall numerous times and cold restarts did not, repeat NOT, alter the behaviour of Iceweasel 5.0.3bo... the least. It is just as rotten (still!) as the beta-versions of Windows(programs) from 10 and more years ago.
Keep away from the version on mozilla.debian.net, it IS despite the choice-button on the website, experimental and NOTHING more.

cynwulf 07-24-2011 01:28 PM

I read a lot of this fud about iceweasel - but the majority, including myself, are running it without issue. I've also only every run either the latest iceweasel from either the experimental repo or mozilla.debian.net and never had a problem - the last iceweasel I had problems with was a 3.0.x release back when I was running Lenny. A large proportion of crashes are usually down to add-on's or the adobe flash plugin.

craigevil 07-24-2011 05:45 PM

No problems here.

$ apt-cache policy iceweasel
iceweasel:
Installed: 7.0~a2+20110715042002-1

5.0-4 0
500 http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ unstable/main i386 Packages

5.0 is very stable, if you are having issues chances are it is either an extension or a theme causing problems, or a weird plugin, try running it in SafeMode and see if the problem persists.

superchar42 07-26-2011 01:08 AM

Iceweasel 5 seems to stall every time I load a page, until it is loaded.
Forced a reinstall when I found out for some reason it wasn't getting upgraded with the rest of my stuff.
Running Mint PPC 9.2/ Debian squeeze on iBook G4.

any tips?

cynwulf 07-26-2011 05:11 AM

The first thing to try is disabling IPv6 (unless you're actually using IPv6?) from within iceweasel - make sure you exit and reload it after doing so - and see if that speeds it up. If it doesn't install another browser from the repos (i.e. midori, epiphany, konqueror, chromium, etc, etc) and see if they have the same problem.

Strike that. As soon as I tried to make a comment on Facebook, it crashed. I'm installing chromium and we'll see how that works.

Though, I can navigate and leave facebook open without it destroying my browsing session and I'm not getting the hangups anymore. :)

cynwulf 07-26-2011 03:46 PM

What you describe sounds like a problem with the flash plugin, try running without flash and see if you can still reproduce the problem.
