Iceweasel 3 - more complaints

I don't know if it's appropriate to vent here, but here goes. I use lenny and I safe-upgrade'd today, (or was it full-upgrade) happy to see a new iceweasel but it doesn't display forms and fieldsets the same way that iceweasel 2.x.x.x does. It wouldn't matter but I'm writing a little html and the thing doesn't show my pages right. I downloaded firefox 3 on an XP virtual machine, and everything looks as it should. It's just iceweasel 3 on debian that's the problem. I had to revert to iceweasel 2 and pin it in /etc/apt/preferences.

Does anyone know if there's likely to be another release, and if so, do they address problems like mine? :(

Do you have an example of such a page?

radiodee1 07-11-2008 03:43 PM

nope... just something I'm writing for school, and I don't have it on an accessible server. The only thing I can say is it's a fieldset in a form in a div, and the fieldset prints a little wierd... I can't even reproduce it now because I've pinned iceweasel 2, but I think the outline of the fieldset prints outside the form... that's all I can say now. If I update later I'll try to reproduce this and post to this thread again. Thanks for replying.

Yes, I've noticed oddities as well. Just normal printing of web pages isn't proper either. The fonts are either different or just sized weirdly. The page looks one way and print preview and the print job itself uses different font sizes or something that makes it different.

The thread above yours discusses a problem of text overlapping on print jobs. That hasn't happened to me, but I can see how it's possible if it's mis-rendering the fonts somehow.

The page setup for printing looks like it's setup properly but it's doing something wacky with the fonts.

Hopefully this'll get fixed up quickly. I'm a bit surprised it survived the unstable period without someone noticing and reporting it as a bug. Maybe it is, as I haven't checked the developer page. Maybe it's not a show stopper, release critical type of bug.

It's a real problem though, unless there's some way of adjusting it I'm not aware of. It might not be something Debian can fix either. We just get the Mozilla package and make a few cosmetic customizations after all. It's possible though. I think Iceweasel includes some fixes that Mozilla hasn't gotten around to dealing with so perhaps our folks will check this thing out as well.

I quit using Iceweasel 3 months ago or so and installed Firefox 3 when it was first out and its way better than debian iceweasel so just drop iceweasel and stay w/ FF..

Can you give some details about what is "way better" than in iceweasel?

Flab0y352 07-16-2008 06:10 PM

ok its not way better but it the real f*ckin thing i know the reason behind it but if you dont have to use it then why not just stick w/ the real thing some pages dont work well w/ iceweasel b/c it doesnt know what the hell it is but if it alter it and change the name from iceweasel to ff the pages work. Why the hell use something that you've got the change? general.useragent.extra.firefox;Firefox/3.0 sure its an easy fix but do what you want! I want the real thing so im using the real thing plan and simple Fu*k iceweasel

So you admit it's not better. Which is normal because nothing is changed in Iceweasel from Firefox, just the name and the icon.

FOSS is this, you can choose what you want to use. So YOU use firefox, I use iceweasel.
But don't say that Firefox is better than Iceweasel, it is just mis-infirmation.

Usually I avoid pages that checks if my useragent is IE and then refuses me access. That's a bad habit of coding.
This is a problem with the webdevelopper and the fact that the standard is not followed by some or the W3C standard not clear enough. It is not a solution to only allow 2 or 3 browsers (IE, FF). What about Epiphany, links, links2, lynx, ... ?

last two posts

Thanks guys on the last two posts. I needed to read something like this. I've not had it easy lately... But for just a second all I could do was laugh at the rant and enjoy the reply. Well... back to my reality.
