Create user.js file for Thunderbird with the preferences in it.

I changed it through the Icedove Config Editor. Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Config Editor
Write network.protocol-handler.app in filter and change value as mentioned above.

network.protocol-handler.app.http "/path/to/browser"
network.protocol-handler.app.https "/path/to/browser"

Changing web browser used by Icedove

I am using Debian Etch. To change the browser that Icedove uses, you need to change the symbolic link /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser. Mine was pointing to epiphany.
