Iceape Mail woes

Not sure this belongs here, but Iceape is Debian specific ;)

Recently, for some obsure reason, my browser wouldn't start. Got strace (hinted from an internet search, I have several PC's at home ;)) which narrowed it to a missing user.js file. Got fed-up by trying too long and updated to Lenny (from Etch). My advise: don't do it, it's a PITA! Do a fresh Lenny install. So I did, whiping the entire drive. Unfortunately, the browser still wouldn't budge when I copied my folders and such over from the file server I saved them on. But suddenly, after some experiments, it decided to work again. Dunno what I did, but it was all there in the end :) Well, turns out Lenny has a few (ahum...) issues that I can't accept, so I re-installed Etch again. And I had a dejá-vu all over... Finally got the browser to work, but whatever I try, the Mail remains dead. :(

It's all there: the Mail folder inside the profile folder, with all account sub-folders inside that. Edited the about:config page (probably incorrect, it doesn't show up as I left it) manually to insert the accounts, but to no avail. I'm out of touch with my regular mail (non-web version only, fortunately I do have a Yahoo and Gmail account ;)) for a good 4 days now and I'm getting annoyed that it doesn't work.

Anyone any ideas I haven't tried yet?

Backup your mail and web folders from your home directory, then delete them from your home directory, and start again. It's most definitely the easiest way. Any other way, and you won't be sure what you haven't found, and with backups, perhaps you can selectively restore mails and or bookmarks etc...

Quick update, even though it's nearly 2 years now. In the end I decided to re-install Etch and start from scratch. I did loose some data, but not exceptionally much. Making a backup is important, but knowing when to do the backup even more so... ;)
