I upgraded from KDE2.2.2 to KDE3.1 and....
...and all i got was this blank grey screen! I've checked out this link http://kde.org/documentation/faq/install.html#id2910510 which I thought would solve my problems since my problem was exactly as described there... I removed the temp. files as suggested but I still got that blank grey screen after a splash screen (with sound) of the KDE 3.1.... I would really like to know how to fix this as KDE3.1 seems very appealing. Thanks. Ganninu.

After some more research I found out that the most reliable way to get KDE3.1 is to remove completely earlier versions of KDE and install the new one. One question though, as it seems to be very complex and prone to many faults - how do i remove all KDE packages (the 2.2.2, and now the 3.1)? I mean, where are they?

COLUMNS=120 dpkg -l | grep 2.2.2 should get all of the 2.2 to get the 3.1 packages use grep 3.1[34] at the end of the command you may want to after you have removed all the packages dpkg --get-selections > selections.txt and open the selections.txt file that will be created in the current directory with an editor and check for any leftovers. I believe you will also want to get rid of libarts if the 3.1.? will not install.
[edit]
I should have been clearer the dpkg command will get you a list of packages to remove.

yes i've just did that in fact i didn't know that dpkg -l was equivalent to RH's rpm -qa... I've removed all KDE 2.2.2 and 3.1 packages... and then i did apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, but now KDE doesn't show up as a session .......... moreover, how can i check whether KDE is instaleld or not? I tried to to kde and hit tab for completion and i only had these entries:
kde-config kdeinit kdeinit_wrapper
kded kdeinit_shutdown kdesu_stub
I think I have somthing missing there!

Ok I got it........ in order to install KDE 3.1 (and/or other versions) you have to:
(1) Unsintall previous versions of KDE
(2) Force an installation of kdm package (apt-get -f install kdm)
(3) Install the kdebase, kdelibs, aRts, kdeaddons packages in that order.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT INSTALL KDE BY DOING apt-get upgrade, cos it will mess the order of installation...
Mind you, you can then proceed to install the remaining KDE packages (such as multimedia, games, etc...) by doing apt-get upgrade...

Not necessarily. I did it last night. All I did was added the kde download site to my sources list and ran dselect (hey I like it) and it installed 3.1 and removed 2.2. I had to do it a second time to get all the stuff I wanted reinstalled, and to add kdm back. But once the second run was done it booted back up. Even my preexisting kde info was still there for my users and they all booted right into KDE fine. Still need some of teh games tonight but I didn't do any UN installing first.
