Hi,

have you run pavucontrol to check you have the correct sinks chosen and not muted etc?

Yes, I've run pavucontrol. I can only see Dummy output device in it.

Does it work as root?
Did you try re-installing(after purging) it(everyting Pulse/...) again*?

*> reason for asking this, all reports on this are only for upgrades and not fresh installs.

Okay, I did solve this, with the help of a suggestion from someone on Reddit (see quote below). Removing timidity-daemon solved it.

I had a similar problem. The culprit was timidity-daemon. It got installed as a "recommend" for something or other in Stretch, but the version in Buster has a bad habit of claiming the audio hardware before pulse can, leaving you with no sound devices available to pulse. The solution is to disable timidity-daemon from running on start-up or just uninstall it altogether. Timidity doesn't need to be daemonized.

Well, it seems I was premature in declaring my lack of sound issue as solved. I just rebooted my computer, and now it has no sound once again, even though sound was activated when I removed timidity-daemon a few hours ago. So, I just reinstalled timidity-daemon, and suddenly sound works again.

Having to install and/or uninstall timidity-daemon each time I boot up the computer to get sound is something I'd rather not have to do.

Hi,

sounds like there might be something a bit off with the postinst and/or postrm scripts in the timidity-daemon package. A quick search finds the following bug report. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugr...cgi?bug=901931

Evo2.

Odd that they proceeded anyway in spite of that bug being noticed during the testing phase. Anyway, I did finally figure out why, even with timidity-daemon being purged (and sound restored), that a reboot would once again screw up sound. It seems that I had my user ("mark") in the audio group. Apparently this group, on my system, is supposed to be empty (see, on this link, "Should users be in the "audio" group?"). So, I changed that, along with making sure that timidity-daemon was not installed, and found that sound now works upon reboot.

So, I now think my sound issue is solved.

PS, also, after removing my user from the audio group, I tested rebooting with timidity-daemon installed, and the sound still failed. So, the main issue is the timidity-daemon.

Debian Stretch to Buster Upgrade ==>> Audio DOES NOT WORK!

Mark Alfred:

Thank you for posting your solution to this problem!!! In the past 2 weeks I did a clean install of Buster on my wife's Acer Desktop and an upgrade from Stretch to Buster on my Dell Laptop. Neither one had sound when everything finished! Your procedure on the timidity-deamon and the Audio group membership solved both problems. We NO longer have any Window$ PCs in this family!

Again, thanks a MILLION!
Mitch
