Congratulations! The latest Sarge installer, which will be in the next Debian release, is a huge improvement over the installation program found in Woody and other previous Debian releases. Hardware detection and configuration is also vastly improved over prior versions.

In the past, I've often used commercial Debian based systems to get started, just because the old Debian installation programs were such a pain. Libranet, Xandros, Knoppix, MEPIS, and a few other systems made installation much easier, and in my opinion, they still make an easier starting point if you are using Intel based systems. IF you are running on some other architecture, you have fewer choices, but the new installer is so much better that it's no longer the huge issue that it once was.
