Strange error message. Might suggest that the iso is faulty. Do the checksums match?

If that fails then install Squeeze then upgrade to Wheezy. This is best done in steps with apt being first then the kernel then the rest. |

There is no need to reinstall Debian from scratch in order to switch to Xfce.
What reasons do you have for running the testing distribution? |
Yes. With no working apt, you're in a lot of trouble and I see no easy way out.
I'm really not sure why you chose to do it that way. Why not (from your working version and as root): Code:
apt-get update && apt-get install xfce |
The full Xfce meta-package is "xfce4".
If apt is playing up at install time it's usually a network or repository problem, but occasionally the testing installer can be broken. I always tend to install a minimal stable first and then just upgrade to testing or unstable. |
