I can't get composite to work (all settings OK I believe) with an Intel 945GM

In general, I managed to get everything working, but I have been struggling with testing the fancy composite effects on my debian testing notebook (dell 640m) with an intel 945GM completely unsuccessfully. I first tried compiz and never got over the white screen problem and now debian testing moved to KDE 4.2 I am using it and again I can't enable the kwin composite effects. KDE complains when I try to enable them.

I am using intel driver, an almost empty xorg.conf and a rather new kernel:

# uname -a
Linux mescamovil 2.6.29 #1 SMP Fri Mar 27 17:40:08 ART 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

Can someone PLEASE help me isolate and at least fix the problem. I am wondering if I should try the latest driver from http://intellinuxgraphics.org/ but I'd rather not.

I have direct rendering working and a descent fps rate with glxgears:

$ glxinfo | grep -i dire
DISPATCH ERROR! _glapi_add_dispatch failed to add glAreTexturesResident!
DISPATCH ERROR! _glapi_add_dispatch failed to add glGenTextures!
DISPATCH ERROR! _glapi_add_dispatch failed to add glIsTexture!
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x67
do_wait: drmWaitVBlank returned -1, IRQs don't seem to be working correctly.
Try adjusting the vblank_mode configuration parameter.
direct rendering: Yes

$ glxgears
DISPATCH ERROR! _glapi_add_dispatch failed to add glAreTexturesResident!
DISPATCH ERROR! _glapi_add_dispatch failed to add glGenTextures!
DISPATCH ERROR! _glapi_add_dispatch failed to add glIsTexture!
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x67
do_wait: drmWaitVBlank returned -1, IRQs don't seem to be working correctly.
Try adjusting the vblank_mode configuration parameter.
7077 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1415.293 FPS
7296 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1459.163 FPS

And here's my card:

$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML and 945GT Express Memory Controller Hub (rev 03)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Is there an update for libGL ?

http://lists.freedesktop.org/archive...er/018655.html

Try checking or re-installing the following packages..
libgl1-mesa-dri
libgl1-mesa-glx

Tried reinstalling those packages but all is the same, I believe I already had the latest ones (at least on debian testing).

as i also use 945 i can confirm that i got a lot of problems with the display
(using the intel driver). sometimes its fine, sometimes its very sluggish.

with what i know i try to solve it, searched a lot at the net, mostly without success. And suddenly it runs smoothly for a while.

sorry i cant help, if you get to know a thing let me know please ( i have given up hope and won`t search further for a solution)

right now i use my old xorg.conf and have added the following:

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "enable"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "DontZap" "off"
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "0"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "0"
EndSection

the Options have to be intendet.

it might break the ability to log into X at all,
you might also try to comment Option AllowEmptyInput and Option AutoAddDevices, or to run without xorg.conf at all.
as said: it might help but it also might be it won`t and crash X at all.

Some more info might help:
grep intel /var/log/Xorg.0.log
glxinfo | grep render

Are you really running all newer versions? Testing is not the bleeding-edge branch of debian.. check your xorg driver for example. If it's too old it will not work with kernel mode setting.

On top of this, you could also try the debian kernels using this line in your sources.list:
deb http://kernel-archive.buildserver.net/debian-kernel trunk main

And here someone using the same intel card:

Not using the bleeding edge, just what's on debian testing. Driver is version 2.3.2-2+lenny6. I might go and try to install the latest from the source, but this means compiling kernels, libdrm, mesa drivers and the driver. If I can somehow hear from other opinions that with that it will work I might try it, but it seems too much and I am wondering if anybody else make it work without doing that and can help.

Code:
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Section "Module"
	Load	"glx"
	Load	"dri"
	Load	"dbe"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier	"Generic Keyboard"
	Driver "kbd"
	Option "XkbRules"	"xorg"
	Option "XkbModel"	"pc104"
	Option "XkbLayout"	"us"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier	"Configured Mouse"
	Driver "synaptics"
	Option	"SHMConfig"	"true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
	Driver	"intel"
	Option	"DRI"	"true"
	Option	"AccelMethod"	"XAA"
	Option	"XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"	"true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier	"Default Screen"
	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
	DefaultDepth	24
EndSection

Section	"ServerLayout"
	Identifier	"Default Layout"
	Screen "Default Screen"	0	0
	InputDevice	"Generic Keyboard"
	InputDevice	"Configured Mouse"
	Option	"AIGLX"	"true"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
	Option	"Composite"	"Enable"
EndSection

Section	"DRI"
	Group	"video"
	Mode	0660
EndSection

This xorg.conf has done wonders for any Intel card I've used lately (I believe including the i945)

Some modifications will probably be needed to fit your setup ofcourse, but the DRI, Composite, XAA stuff is the important bits...

from what i see the only difference is i had:
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
which is now replaced by:
Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
while UXA didnt work that changed everything, its *so* smooth now (on lenny, sid i didnt check yet).
thanks a lot

I also use an Intel 945. I get unbelievable frame rates in Stellarium. You can use xrandr to do some basic tweaks. Debian squeeze worked out of the box on my lappy. Even the S-Video out works. I didn't try the external monitor. Not only did squeeze work out of the box, but it's proved fairly difficult to mess up, even when you really hack at it.

@j1alu: Did you get composite to work (either kwin 4.2 or compiz?) I tried XAA and while I got a different effect (black screen), kwin effects failed to start.

yes, on lenny it works now (on sid it doesn`t seem to, but i`m tired of that problem right now/for a while).
i just had a short look at kde4, usually i`m using e17 with ecomorph == compiz for e17.
for me the xorg.conf supplied by war1025 works fine. even if i`m not running ecomorph all is much smoother.
sorry that for you it doesn`t work. if i`ll get to know further info i`ll let you know.

(ps: i`m not sure, i think i removed kde4 and installed it again and got the effects working that way. as said- finally i removed kde at all)

greetings
