Hope it helps.

From the FAQ http://conky.sourceforge.net/faq.html

Q: Where did the default .conkyrc go? I ran conky and looked in my home directory, and I couldn't find it!

A: No .conkyrc is created by default. In the conky tarball there is a file called conkyrc.sample.gz (Which will be installed on some distributions in /usr/share/doc/conky-*/). Also, check the screenshots page for more examples.

From the man page http://conky.sourceforge.net/docs.html

Default configuration file is $HOME/.conkyrc (can be changed from conky.c among other things). See conkyrc.sample. If installing from Debian package, this should be in /usr/share/doc/conky/examples ("gunzip conkyrc.sample.gz" to get conkyrc.sample).

You might want to copy it to $HOME/.conkyrc and then start modifying it. Other configs can be found at http://conky.sf.net

thankyou for your reply farslayer, as i stated (maybe not to clearly) in my post, i do not seem to have the $HOME/.conkyrc or /usr/share/doc/conky-*/ dir anywhere on my system. I have tried countless variations just in case like ~/conkyrc but still no joy. Might try a reinstall see if that sorts it?
thank you for your time

it clearly states the file does not exist by default in your home directory. If you cannot locate the sample in the doc directory, simply download any one of the examples from http://conky.sf.net (on the screenshot page) and drop it in place.. ~/.conkyrc
