how to tell dselect about a program installed from source?

Is it possible to tell dselect that something has been installed from source code? Or does it already know? I mean otherwise it might want to install a dependency that is already installed, or something.

Thanks any help.

Thanks.

So you sometimes have to have two versions of the same thing installed - sometimes dselect refuses to accept the user's attempt to overide it (happened to me trying to install mc)? Seems a flaw.

Thanks. That appears to be the complete answer. Not often that happens.
