How to specify which version to install with APT-GET?

Hi people! I'm new to these forums. And also new to Debian (I was a RedHat user). Please your help with this...

I executed

>apt-get install postgresql

And postgresql 7.2.1 was installed. How do I tell apt-get that the version I want to install is 7.4.1?

I read about this. Would this be ok?

>apt-get install -t testing postgresql

I also read about apt_preferences but seems a little confusing. It seems like if I set this preference via apt_preferences, it would change the preference for ALL the packages I install, but I only want postgres 7.4.1

Is there an easier way of doing that?
I thought trying dpkg -i , but inevitably dependences error appear. By the way... how do I force dpkg (or apt-get) to install all the dependencies a package needs, instead of falling down?

Thanks,

Upps! Right now I'm at work and don't have access to my server
(BTW, if you know a way of accessing via SSH a server through a HTTP proxy, it would be cool )

Debian is 3.0 (woody). I suppose, apt-get is the default version that comes with that distribution.

Apt will automatically grab the latest version available for you. Debian woody is relatively old and won't have very recent software. If you want recent stuff, use unstable or testing.
