How to make Lexmark S305 scanner (wifi) work with xsane?
 

After I solved the issue about printer, now I'm struggling to make the integrated scanner of lexmark S305 work with debian.
The device is connected to the network through integrated wifi connection (it is NOT connected with usb to a host, which act as a server), but I don't know how xsane can recognize it.
I have just added the ip address in /etc/sane.d/net.conf, but it doesn't work at all. I read some tutorials on how to configure a network scanner, but they are all related to a scanner connected to a computer through usb, and then shared on the network by this computer.

The second issue (probably more important) is that xsane probably doesn't recognize even with usb connection the scanner. The latter is not listed in the supported scanner list. Indeed connecting by usb to my laptop, it doesn't work. I haven't found any driver for it, but probably it could work with driver of other scanners.

I have debian unstable with kernel 2.6.32-trunk-amd64.

Any ideas to solve these 2 issues?

Lexmark is notorious among the Linux community for not providing specs on their hardware so drivers can be written. Any that are out there are a result of reverse engineering and luck. As far as scanners you are SOL. If there isn't a driver for it, then it won't work. And you likely won't get a driver for another maker to work on the scanner. Lexmark hardware, be it printers, scanners or digital cameras, are next to paperweights as far as their usefulness in Linux. It has nothing to do with your usb or wifi. The scanner itself will not work.

yeah I know that.. I contacted lexmark technical support, which replied me that they are working on developing scanner driver for it..

While I generally tell Lexmark users they are out of luck, I've come across this thread and will pass it on, hoping someone will find it useful and give some feedback if any of the drivers from any of the links work.

yes this is the guide that I followed to make the printer work. However you can find also printer driver for ubuntu also on lexmark website..(there is another post I made before which talks about other issues you can encounter when you try to install it) it is not so trivial to find them, because if you use driver finder it doesn't return you all drivers available.. but if you go on products page and you choose your printer, you can click on "download drivers" and it magically appears a page where you can select your linux distros..

Now the scanner works with xsane. Just install the recent driver, downloadable from lexmark website.
