How to limit my own bandwidth?

Hi! I've got home network which have 2Mbps access to Internet. I need to limit my computer to use no more than 500kbps. The problem is I don't have access to home server or its configuration, so I need to set this limit on my computer and nowhere else. Is this possible? When using Windows I use NetLimiter 2 Pro which is working very fine. Thanks for anything which can help me

If you want something "easy" that directly hooks into Iptables maybe try the LARTC Wondershaper for starters?

If you have time to read a lot of material, this is a great website that will help you do just about anything you want. Just find that section that describes what you want to do with iproute2. Originaly, I used the information in this document to throttle my upload to make sure it didn't interfere with my download speed. That was back when I was using a modem.
