how to know if my nic is up a running in my etch box

hi, I recently install debian etch, my question is: is there a command that can test if my nic is installed correctly, up, and running? My NIC is a VIA VT6103 10/100mbps LAN and my motherboard is a biostar m7viz.

best regards

looks like that nic would use the via-rhine driver
lsmod | grep via-rhine to check if the module is loaded, in case the suggestions above don't yield positive results.

Commands

Also you can log as root and use ifconfig to see if the card is active

Code:
debian:~# ifconfig
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:15:f2:d7:8f:b1
          inet addr:192.168.1.101  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::215:f2ff:fed7:8fb1/64 Scope:Link
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:39255453 errors:1 dropped:65 overruns:0 frame:1
          TX packets:36390166 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

          RX bytes:1645486054 (1.5 GiB)  TX bytes:2352596781 (2.1 GiB)
          Interrupt:21

eth1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:15:f2:d7:9f:77
          inet addr:10.0.0.2  Bcast:10.0.0.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
          Interrupt:17 Base address:0x2000

lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING  MTU:16436  Metric:1

          RX bytes:720996724 (687.5 MiB)  TX bytes:720996724 (687.5 MiB)
and if you want to bring up or down an interface use ifup or ifdown follow the name of the nic
Code:
