how to install Limewire Pro in Debian

ok folks, I just changed from Mandrake 10.1 to Debian 3.1 After an exausting trial and error of getting Debian to install I finally got it (had to change the default video driver it chose from vesa to nv) I tried to install with the 2.6 kernel but that didn't go well so I just did it with the 2.4 Anyway, after I got onto my desktop I did my usual: downloaded gaim (that was hell too) and then my favorite firefox (1.0.4 because later versions boot me off certain web sites); got my plugins for firefox; now I'm trying to download limewire pro but can't get the damned thing to install. I've downloaded both the download types that limewire.com offers (rpm and other linux OS) The other linux OS download is in .zip format and archiver and file roller won't extract it. So I surfed the web and found a how to for the rpm package. Seems all I have to do is open a terminal and type the command "alien LimeWire*" Well my terminals don't recognize the command "alien" so that didn't work. I found some other howto's here on LQ and tried those but that didn't work either. I tried getting into my sources.list file and updating it and then again installing limewire from this updated source list but the list only has the following as output both before and after I updated it in terminal (as root and as normal user both):

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-7 (20050607)]/ unstable contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-6 (20050607)]/ unstable contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-5 (20050607)]/ unstable contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-4 (20050607)]/ unstable contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-3 (20050607)]/ unstable contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-2 (20050607)]/ unstable contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-1 (20050607)]/ unstable contrib main

deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib

I'm thinking that when I installed Debian and it asked me for other update methods I chose no and now it will only allow me to install from my distro cd's. So first, how do I install Limewire and second, how do I get this sources.list to be able to get stuff from the internet via an ftp site or http (I assume this is where I can get many or all debian packages so I think I need this for future package installs).

I really want my limewire back because it is so much faster than other P2P programs I've tried such as giFT and gnutella.

Well, enough rambling. Hope to get some feedback and help on this so I can get my limewire back.

And by the way, Limewire doesn't have a limewire.bin option for me to download just the 2 that I stated above.

Ok if I understand it well, you want to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list . You should do this as root, but I don't know what sources are best for you. I think you should at least have something as
Code:
deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ stable main
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib
in your sources.list. The first one is the one where are the official packages of debian stable in (but it is possible that there is a better one for you because I don't live in the USA and I use a different one). The second one is for mplayer and some codecs (like w32). The last one is for the security updates but that's already in it if I understand it right. The one with the cdrom you can command out. (put # before it).
Than run as root in a terminal
Code:
apt-get update
. If you want to have other packages and you found an apt-source just put it in the sources.list and run afterwards apt-get update as root and you can install the other package.

Installing a program is just as root
Code:
apt-get install packagename
. You can also use synaptic for that which is a graphical frontend for apt-get.
For using alien you first have to install it if it isn't already on your pc by apt-getting it, same thing for unzipping things. So apt-get install alien unzip.
For Limewire it's just a matter of unzipping the .zip and than run by
Code:
sh ./runLime.sh
. (I think you should have java installed for it).
Hope this is helpfull and if you still have problems or questions just ask them.

Greets,
Sabazios

Ps: sorry for my bad English and please correct it so I can learn something.

Thanks for the response Sabazios3. My question is how do I add these mirrors (or any mirror so as to obtain packages via ftp or http? I've tried every possible command that I find on the internet to get a mirror added to my sources.list but they are never in my sources.list after I think I've added it/them: Even when I type in <apt-get update>. And I am doing this all as root, but to no avail. As I stated in the beginning of the first post, I am less than 24 hours old in Debian and am still fairly wet behind the ears when it comes to the command line.

Thanks for any additional input,
jmill_1

You can do this by
Code:
kate /etc/apt/sources.list
as root in a terminal. (change kate by your editor like gedit, vi, ...). Then just add those lines there and save this. After you did this apt-get update and it should be all fine.

Greets,
Sabazios

the best way is to apt-get install apt-spy, then run apt-spy

apt-spy will test every mirror and select the fastest one.

apt-spy takes a lot of time tho, you may want to specify the area your in

Code:
-a area
This will cause only servers in the specified area to be bench-
marked. By default, valid values for area are `Africa', `Asia',
              `Europe', `North-America', `Oceania' and `South-America'. It is
very easy to define your own areas or subset of servers to
benchmark. For further details see apt-spy.conf(5).
apt-spy -a North-America for example....

Well, folks, I have it solved with the help of a young Canadian linux guru who got me into linux in the first place. Seems I just had to create a shortcut from my java folder and paste it in usr/lib so all programs I download can use java whenever I download them. But thanks for the assist. Now to a new forum to learn how to burn dvd's in Debian. See ya there...
