how to install debian from a lan

I would like to set up a LAN server to provide the files for a net install (with no internet access). I think this is possible. I saw it alluded to on the Debian pages but not much info. Suggestions?

I would like the server to be amd64bit but serve for 386 installs. How could I do this?

This was mentioned in another thread two years ago but not much came of it.

What you need is a local repository. Basically, it's a local FTP mirror and it's explained here: http://www.debian.org/mirror/ftpmirror I'd recommend you'd read the sections on "How to mirror" and "Partial mirroring". Do a Google search on "ftp server setup howto Debian" and you're bound to find a lot of info on that.

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/

Particularly look at 4.6. Basically you would download the DVD iso and store it on the tftp server. Then install from there.

A second method would be to use an apt-proxy, local mirror, or local repository. Then install a base system with the first Debian CD and then download all the other packages from your local repository.
