how to get sarge,cd-images??
 

hi there

i am new to debain and when i got myslef a copy of debain woody rc4 i thought i would get the new packages but it is still with those old packages
and i read at the debian site that no release has been some for sarge
so how do we go about installing sarge
is internet the only medium

can't i get some iso images as do not have a good internet connection at this site and i canot go for network install

Here is the "weekly" ISO site for "sarge" Debian > http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/weekly/

You only really need CD #1 for the first link as the rest are different 'companion' types of the first CD.

For different ways of getting Debian isos see this page: http://www.debian.org/distrib/cd Here you can choose between jigdo, BitTorrent or ftp/http. Each section has link to the stable and testing (Sarge currently) versions.
If you insist on not using the net-installer, you may download the whole 14 Sarge CDs here: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ Don't let yourself fooled by the title ("Installing Debian with the Debian-Installer). The 3rd row of options below this title are the links to the full CD sets (which eventually leads to the link the previous poster offered to you).
And indeed, you can download only the first CD as it contains the base system and most of the day to day programs a regular user uses. This means if you need something else, not included on the 1st CD, you'll still have to use ftp or http to get the required packages or the other CDs.
So, I'd recommend you to use instead the net-installer as it wouldn't make a difference from the 1st full CD if would you need something else than what's included on it. Just in case you're interested, I also have a poor Internet connection (25-30 kb/s aveage download rate) , but I managed to install Debian using the net-installer in around 3 1/2 hours.
Or, there is also the solution of buying the CDs. Here is the list for your country: http://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/#in

25-30 kbps is good internet speed
i get around 4 kbps on dialup at my home
while i get more thabn 100 at my university,but i cannot take my machine over there

i think i will go on with thee woody packages
and i have slackware also for my other needs
i am not going to download 14 Cds for sarge,also since we are expecting the stable release

Of course, there's always the possibility of upgrading from stable to testing. You may want to take a look here: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/re...-woody.en.html (it's written back when Potato was the stable branch, but it's still a valid howto).

i started downloading sarge with jigdo, the other day, and i get alot of error 404: not found
i know what it means, but i still have one question
what mirrors have all the files for sarge, or i have to change mirrors everytime i resume downloading?
isn't there a way to know how much of the iso.tmp file has been written? as in mb

before downloading those files u need to check out the mirror that has the latest files

i had to check a dozen of them before i could get the latest ones

also what are u using to download those file

While it says Sarge, it is the testing branch. At the moment, Woody=stable, Sarge=testing, Sid=unstable. When Sarge will be released as stable, its "replacement", the future testing will be called "Etch".
