How to get a color text console?

I've just finished installing Debian 3.1. But when I loged in, the text console only display in black and white. What should I do to get a color text console like I used to in say Slackware?

simply modify one of, or all three of the following files:

(in your home directory)

eval `dircolors -b`
alias ls='ls --color=auto'
alias dir='ls --color=auto --format=vertical'
