How to Create a install CD from current Debian Lenny Installation
 

Hi there,
I would like to create an install cd/dvd from my current Debian Lenny installation.

anybody have any tips as how to do this.

I guess this will imply all official debian packages will be saved.

As additional nice to have info would be the following:-

any tips as to how I would capture none standard packages/configurations on the system

i.e. I have additional packages installed
I have a customized Apache and Php configuration i.e. config
files.
Also mysql database is populated forsome applications.

Not sure exactly what you are asking here.

If you want to make a backup of your configuration so you can get it all running again on your personal hardware in case of a failure, then that's easy. Much information on the web about the many ways to do this.

But if you think "My system is purrrfect, I'd like to re-distribute it, and have other people enjoy my linux experience", the sad answer is NO.

Just look at what mythtv have been trying to do for years.

The problem is that every user will have a slightly different hardware configuration, so unless you are prepared to probe everything to define exactly what system your "installation" is going to be running on, and load and configure all the right modules, in the right order, for the hardware that is found, it's unlikely to work. And then, next week, some manufacturer brings out a new piece of hardware, that you hadn't counted on... How to deal with that?

But you are welcome to try.... You did search on mythtv and read the links, for a couple of hours, I hope.

MS and device manufacturers probably spend BILLIONS of dollars to make sure that if you buy something that "works with windows 7", it does work, usually, mostly. But check the windows forums for "It doesn't work".

Linux has no funding, and no advertising budget, but many people are collaborating to see that it does progress, without directly making any money for themselves in the process.

Sure to fail? It seems not.

I don't wish to come across as negative, but do you appreciate the problems?

Have a look at aptoncd too.

I do it with live-helper, the first link, which is nice and easy.
a)Make sure to have got about three times as much space as your installation.
b) it will make a copy of everything (!). That is a problem in case you got lots of data.
