How to count total number of packages in entire Debian Distribution

I have read on many websites that Debian offers more than 18000 software packages. I have two questions:

1. Is there any command or website by which we can do a real-time query regarding the number of packages in the Debian distribution?

2. Does this count of 18000 includes main, contrib and non-free or only main?

Thanks

1) Try your luck on http://packages.debian.org Keep in mind that the maintainers of that website "will not be very happy" if you query their pages too often...

2) IIRC it's only main

Ok I downloaded the txt file containing list of all packages from here.

Then I did:
Code:
debian-workstation:~# wc -l allpackages.txt
23168 allpackages.txt
So does that mean it is fare to say that Debian has 23000+ packages?

Add debian-multimedia.org and it jumps to over 25k . Gotta love Debian.

I don't think that number is entirely accurate. For example, i think that there are some pseudo packages that depend on other packages only to make things easier. For example, IIRC
Code:
apt-get install firefox
depends on iceweasel. It's there to help people who whan firefox but don't realise it's called Iceweasel for debain. I don't think firefox and iceweasel count as 2 packages.

I'm sure that there are probably also other things that would interfere with that number

However, it's still alot of packages

If you add in non-free, contrib, main, and multimedia archives there is an absolutely obscene number of packages. Debian's claim of 18k+ is very very conservative (as with most things Debian.)

Actually that number includes non-free and contrib. So we remove them then we will get close to 18K+ packages I think.
