how to change langauge settings ?

This might sound as a pretty stupid question, however it is of big importance to me. At installation time i have chosen my native language to be my default language. With time it has shown that it was a pretty stupide decison, and as myself couldn't find out how to change that, I decided to post this question on this forum in hope to find the answer. I remember that fedora, redhat and mdk have a command for changing the language (I think it is system-config-languages in FC) but there is no such command in debian, at least in GNOME environment which I use. So I wonder could anyone help me with this issue ?

to easen up i use
Sarge with 2.6.8 kernel with GNOME desktop environment.
