how to activate iptables

I was recently trying to set up a tiny firewall on my sarge laptop using gnome-lokkit. Unfortunately there is something wrong with iptables: lokkit complains that it cannot start iptables although they are installed.

However, there is no iptables-related stuff in /etc/init.d (unlike on my RH9 system) and I guess this is why they are not set up correctly. I have tried to reinstall and reconfigure the package but without any success.

Are there any simple ways to get them running?

Thanks in advance

The default Debian kernel images should support netfilter/iptables firewalling. I haven't used gnome-lokkit for ages so I cannot offer any advices how to get it working, but you could try one of the firewalls mentioned in the sticky thread, "Debian Configuration Post-Install". Guarddog's GUI is designed for KDE, Firestarter is for Gnome, and FireHOL doesn't have GUI. Maybe one of these will work better than gnome-lokkit.

Note: before installing a new firewall you should uninstall all other firewalls using the "--purge" option (apt-get --purge remove lokkit) so that your earlier firewall settings don't hamper the new firewall.
