How many?

Since there are actually 5 DVDs needed to download Debian, I was wondering how many are actually used for installation cause other Linuxes come with 1 dvd only?

I was thinking of perhaps downloading one, installing it and if I like it, install others which by my wild guess are programs and other stuff that might be needed for me in future.

So can I actually install Debian with 1st DVD? Or do I have to have all 5 DVDs?

Whenever I have to install Debian, I usually just use the 40MB "business card" ISO and rely on an internet connection to get what I need.

In my honest opinion, downloading the package CD/DVDs is a waste of bandwidth - it's nice if you have an non-networked box for which you may want to install stuff from the Debian repositories from, but the problem there is that all of the packages on those DVDs are a snapshot of the repositor{y|ies} and probably aren't up-to-date.

Truth be told you don't need ANY of the DVD's if you have a broadband internet connection.

Download the 150mb Netinstall.iso and use that to install your system. it's certainly faster than downloading a single DVD let alone 5..
